Widgets Inc. comes up with a perfect solution for both situations.

They decide to take on "affiliates" to promote their product or service.

Widgets Inc. offers to pay these affiliates only when they make a sale.

This can be done in the online world but usually takes place on the internet. 

Widgets Inc. gives each affiliate a company link with a unique embedded code. 

Now, all these affiliates have to do is

1. promote the link on the internet
2. get people to click on her "affiliate link" to get back to the company

Each time a customer gets to Widgets Inc. through Gene's link, and makes a 

purchase, Gene gets paid.
